July
2006
In order to commemorate the
75th Anniversary of Portland Swimming Club we are holding a special
event on Saturday 30th September 2006. This will consist of a
‘Swimathon’ or ‘Mass Swim’ to which every club member, past or present
and every member of their family is invited. Between 6.00pm and 8.00pm
we have hired the pool at Portland and over the course of about 1hr we
will attempt to swim a collective distance of 75 miles, or if we can’t
make that distance we try for 75 kilometres. This event will be
followed by a buffet and disco in the Portland Leisure Centre. We want
to publicize widely the 75th anniversary celebrations to improve the
profile of the club. Ian Barr is attempting to establish a database of
contacts and plans to contact the local papers to help publicize the
anniversary. Mr Eric Notman, the Manager of the Portland Leisure
Centre, has offered support for a club ‘swim and disco’ event.
Indicative cost will be roughly £5 per person. Please spread the word
and let Ian Barr know the contact details of any former members who
might be interested in attending.

Pool Closures
Noel Street is available up to and including 1st August for
club nights, but it would not be used after the 1st August
for the rest of the summer. Sessions at Noel Street would resume on 12
September. The University Pool would not be used over the summer, with
the last session on 30th July and club nights resuming on the
3rd September. Only Portland would be used over the rest of
the summer, once the refurbishment has been completed. Sessions are due
to start again on 03 August.
Swimming Costumes in Club Colours
The club committee has taken a decision to introduce Nottingham Portland
Swimming Club costumes in our own club colours for both boys and girls
from 01 January 2007. After this date we are asking all swimmers who
compete for the club in galas, to wear the club colours (good quality
and well designed chlorine resistant costumes in black, with purple
flash and including the Portland Logo).
Also, once
we have stock of costumes, all new club members will be asked to buy
club costumes when they officially join Portland and we are actively
seeking the support of parents, guardians and existing members who are
yet to become involved in galas, to replace their worn costumes with the
club colours. We hope that all swimmers will be wearing club colours at
training and at gala's by June 2007.
Costs are
expected to be as follows:
£16.00 - Girls Sizes 24-32
£18.50 - Larger Girls / Ladies Sizes
£10.50 - Boys brief, Sizes 24-28
£11.75 - Boys / Men's brief, Sizes 30-38
Costumes
will be available from the club shop on our website from September /
October 2006 - What a good idea for a Christmas present to meet the 01
January introduction date!'
August bank Holiday Camping Night
The Portland SC camping trip has been scheduled for overnight on
Saturday 09 September. For more information please contact Ian Willetts.
Steve Hofton Gala Secretary Reports
The club performed creditably at recent Galas including the J. C. Dobb
Galas on 20th May (at Ilkeston) 10th June (at
Hucknall) and 1st July (at Hucknall). Overall Portland
finished 4th in the J. C. Dobb Spring Competition with 450
points. The Northern Trophy Gala has been removed from the 2006 gala
schedule. Periodically we have considered whether there should be more
distance events in the club championships. It has been decided that we
should keep the present formula and look to build longer distances into
an event later in the year. The club championships will take place on
the 14th and 15th October 2006 at the University
Pool. More details to follow.
Next Gala
The next J. C. Dobb gala will take place at Sutton on the 9th
September with the unusual start time of 6.15 for 6.45.
